The Berry Family of Central Texas

Then and Now

Travel 2013

Reunion of the Martin Family - Centrailia MO
In May we traveled to Missouri to attend a family reunion with the Martin side of the family in Centralia.  Pauline organized a great lunch at a local restaurant.

Reunion of the Berry & Turpin Families - Troy MO
At our second reunion we met Berry cousins that I never knew about until Stephen found Jack on It was a Berry-Turpin get-together and was quite a large group with fifty or more attending.  Jack and his dad have done quite a bit of research and have two full volumes of photos and documents all the way back to our ancestor who came to Jamestown from England in the 1600's.

Visit with Madge - St. Louis MO
Stephen joined us and while in the St. Louis area we had lunch with Marge, the twin sister of Carol's mother Phyllis. She is perky as ever and recounted all of her gambling escapades at various casinos, including how much she won on each game!

Jonesburg Gardens RV Park - Jonesburg MO (not a garden spot)
This is the RV park we stayed in - convenient to Centralia, Troy, and St. Louis, but certainly no garden spot.  I wondered what the scum on the lake was ... asked the owner and he said "oh that's our sewage pond".

After visiting with Candy and Charles in SC we went to Ellijay GA to visit Jim and Ruth.  I met Jim in Port Aransas several years ago.  He is a ham radio operator (WA4YBC) and decided to leave his Port Aransas home after issues with the local HOA.  He is now much happier in GA with a new 80' radio tower and near to long-time family and friends.  We had lunch at Amicalola State Park and visited several wineries in the area.

Colorado and New Mexico
Visiting Bill & Margaret Cumberland - Gunnison & Crested Butte CO
After our annual stay at Ponderosa Campground near Antonito CO we went to Gunnison and visited with Bill & Margaret Cumberland.  They took us on a great ATV ride up into the mountains, past rustic cabins and old gold mines, to a beautiful meadow with a spectacular view.  While in Gunnison, Carol and I took a side trip to Crested Butte.  It just happened they were having an art festival.

Visiting Frank & Carolyn - Montrose & Ouray CO
In Montrose we visited Frank & Carolyn Andrews.  I knew Frank in Jr. High School - we both played trumpet in the band.  I had not seen him since High School days.  They took us to see the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park - it was quite spectacular.  Carol and I took a side trip to famous town of Ouray, had lunch and saw a beautiful waterfall in the rain.  That night we attended a street festival in Montrose.

Visiting Jack & Jackie - Durango & Silverton CO
In Durango we had dinner with Jack & Jackie Sims, and toured the Durango & Silverton Railroad museum.  Carol and I took a side trip to Silverton and had lunch at the famous Handlebars (as in moustache) restaurant.  In Durango we walked the river walk and visit a fish hatchery.

Richard's 50 Year High School Reunion - Albuquerque NM
In Albuquerque we attended Richard's 50 Year Reunion of Rio Grande High School.  It was a two-night event with an informal get-together on Friday night followed by a dinner-dance on Saturday night.  It was great seeing many old friends I had not seen since High School.  The sad part was viewing the Memorial table where I unfortunately also found several old friends.  Carol and I drove by our childhood homes and had some great Mexican food with Jack & Jackie, and Jan Downs, who were also in Albuquerque at the time.
