The Berry Family of Central Texas

Then and Now

2009 Ponderosa Campground  - Riding the Cumbres & Toltec Railway

In August, Suzanne, Shane, Austin and Jackson joined us during our first week at Ponderosa Campground in Colorado.  Like last year, they camped in a tent beside our trailer.  Carol's brother Gary and his family camped there also so we had large family meals every night.

Two years ago we rode the Cumbres & Toltec narrow gauge railroad from Antonito to Osher and back.  It was a great ride.  We thought the boys would enjoy riding an authentic steam train so this year we rode from Chama, NM to Osher and back.  The scenery is spectacular.  I think Shane and the boys may have enjoyed lunch the most!  The railroad has a large cafeteria in Osher - the food is really good, and there's lots of it.

On another day we visited the Great Sand Dune National Park, just East of Alamosa.  It's absolutely amazing to see 700 ft high sand dunes in the middle of the Colorado prairie.  Needless to say we didn't climb to the top - that takes a couple of hours.  Nearby is the beautiful Zapata Falls.  After a few miles on a treacherous road we discovered that the waterfall is actually far back in a canyon.  The only way to see it is to scale a nearly sheer wall and then wade in the ice cold water!  Richard, Shane, and Austin did it - without shoes and socks so they would have something warm to put on afterwards.
